Eskom’s ongoing efforts to increase fixed network fees are drawing sharp criticism, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) warning that such changes could have serious consequences for South African consumers and businesses.
According to DA spokesperson on energy and electricity, Kevin Mileham, these tariff structures are "nothing more than an attempt by Eskom to offload the costs of its corruption and mismanagement onto the public."
Alarming Fee Increases for Consumers
An analysis by MyBroadband revealed staggering increases in electricity costs for households connected to the grid:
Households using no electricity have seen their bills rise by approximately 321%.
Those consuming only 100 kWh per month now face a hike of nearly 130%.
This is on top of a proposed tariff increase of 36.15%, highlighting the financial burden on already strained South Africans.
Solar Users Penalized
Mileham strongly criticized Eskom’s approach, stating, “Eskom punishes South Africans who have taken proactive steps, such as investing in solar energy, to reduce their reliance on Eskom’s unreliable supply.”
He emphasized that Eskom’s declining revenue is a result of consumers seeking alternative energy solutions due to its inability to provide stable electricity and rising costs. Instead of supporting the transition to renewable energy, Eskom’s proposed fees penalize those embracing cleaner, more sustainable power sources.
A Call for Fair Tariffs
The DA reiterated its call for renewable energy to be a key component of South Africa’s energy strategy, urging Eskom to support, rather than penalize, efforts toward energy independence. Mileham stressed that the proposed tariff structure is unfair, especially when reduced electricity consumption results in higher bills under “fixed” costs.
South Africa’s energy regulator, NERSA, has a duty to ensure tariffs are fair, balanced, and sustainable, Mileham said. He also called for a diversified energy mix that is stable, affordable, and future-focused, noting that Eskom’s proposal falls short of these goals.
DA’s Demands
The DA has called on NERSA to reject Eskom’s pricing plans and to propose a tariff structure that promotes energy independence and self-generation. The party vowed to continue fighting for a fair, affordable, and sustainable energy future for South Africa.
“We urge Eskom and NERSA to abandon policies that undermine consumers’ efforts to adopt alternative energy and stop forcing South Africans to bear the costs of Eskom’s inefficiencies. It’s time for real change. The DA is committed to ensuring that South Africans are not punished for pursuing a cleaner, more reliable energy future,” Mileham concluded.
This critical issue highlights the need for Eskom and the government to rethink policies that discourage renewable energy adoption. As energy challenges persist, South Africa must prioritize sustainable and equitable solutions that benefit all citizens.
