Sharp Increase in Carbon Tax Coming; Embrace the Opportunities

The tax on carbon dioxide emissions is projected to increase by up to 140% by 2030.

South African companies could face a rise of up to 60% in electricity costs by 2034 due to this new carbon tax, with rates expected to climb from R190 to R462 per ton by 2030.

However, Samantha Graham-Maré, Deputy Minister of Energy and Electricity, believes this increase presents opportunities.

The Deputy Minister argues that now is the time to invest in cleaner, cost-efficient energy sources to build a more resilient and sustainable economy for all South Africans.

“By embracing renewable energy, we not only reduce emissions but also create new growth opportunities, secure the future of our industries, and keep South African businesses competitive in an international market that values sustainability. Transitioning to cleaner energy is essential for maintaining profitability and creating a better future,” she said.

According to Graham-Maré, protecting jobs and strengthening the economy are currently top priorities for the Ministry of Electricity and Energy.

She emphasized that the government is ready to work with businesses to unlock the potential of renewable energy, reduce the country’s reliance on coal, stabilize energy prices, and secure a prosperous future.

“Together, we can protect jobs, build resilience, and pave the way for sustainable economic growth. Energy efficiency equals job creation,” the Deputy Minister concluded.
